The Cotswolds to The Capital: Wedding Photography Workshop

This weekend I jumped in my little red car and pootled along the M4 and M25…the M25 was a far slower pootle I might add. Friday night commute, yay!! Eventually I landed in Sidcup,  and stayed with my best friend of a million gazillion years.

The next morning, said best friend saved me a whole load of trouble and ran me up to Greenwich, since parking in town is either impossible or ridiculously expensive! There I finally met the awesome Lisa Lobanova. We had been planning and discussing and skyping about our workshop since mid December and it was so good to finally meet!

We set up at The Greenwich Arts and Community Centre for our Theory day. There, Lisa and I both went through everything we both know about the different ways to start in Wedding Photography, how to stand out, be yourself, and keep clients happy. And do you know what? Lisa and I cant half talk!! But fun was had by all, with lots of questions, discussion and some fab points raised.

Day 2 started off at The Novotel’s conference room talking through Creative shooting, how to shoot in the City, making the most of other people as props, the general street art around you, hard and artificial light sources, and how to put them into practise.

In the afternoon, 9 of us followed our beautiful couple, with the stylist around the streets of Greenwich and into the famous Greenwich Park. Stylist Ksenia Fokina kept changing up our couples looks with different colours, textures and accessories. We started with a relaxed engagement shoot style, then upped to to an elopement style and finished with a very funky bride in her gown and Groom in a tux. Ksenia was on hand at every moment to keep our couple looking tip top for our crowd of photographers.

Tatiana Doroguaya was our make up artist and hair stylist for the shooting part of the workshop and gave our bride Sasha a stunning natural but slighty smokey look which really showed off those baby blue peepers! Her hair was tonged and styled in soft waves and braids for a boho look.

Both Lisa and I set up our shots, directed the couples and led the group with pointers and prompts of how and why we were shooting as we were. Everyone had ample opportunity to get their shots and from what I am seeing coming through the groups this morning, they are already looking STUNNING! I am so proud!

It was a fantastic honour teaching alongside Lisa Lobanova, a photographer that I have admired for years! I cannot wait to share with you some of the resulting images from the attendees and some more of their feedback.

“This weekend couldn’t be better! Two amazing and inspiring teachers, talented group of beautiful ladies and this sunny weather!

Thanks everyone, it was a pleasure and I cannot wait to see our results”

Oobaloos Wedding Photography met Lisa Von Hallwyl Millinery

It was with great pleasure that I finally had a chance to catch up with the delightful Lisa Von Hallywl, Milliner to the celebs, stars and racegoers alike! I met Lisa about a year ago at an event and had a marvellous time trying on her gorgeous creations! Seriously…these hats are not just hats. They are an extension of your personality. They can be fun, elegant, understated, overstated, but whatever it is, it is perfect for you!

So after being sussed out by pup, Hattie (yes, Hattie!) Lisa showed me up to her showroom. This colourful and totally decadent room is full of life! Lisa says to me, that her confidence doesn’t ooze from herself, it oozes from her creations. She’s not wrong there. You can see a creation from every mood Lisa may have ever been in!

LVH-1

As we sat with a cup of tea in Alice In Wonderland’s Mad Hatter cups, I asked Lisa how on earth she came to be a milliner. As my mum said to me…she didn’t know milliners still existed. Now for the most part, in our day to day life, why would we? We no longer live in a time that a statement head piece is a part of our day to day wardrobe. We may only wear one a handful of times in our life, but, those times will be special occasions. A wedding of a loved one, or a big day at the races, or meeting The Queen?! Who knows, but whatever it is, it has to be an extension of YOU.

LVH-25

Lisa studied in Fashion and Costume and has a BA and Ma in these subjects. She learned sales and retail at Next but it wasn’t until she worked as an assistant for a designer that she found she excelled in Millinery design.

Currently in full flow of wedding season, Lisa is fitting lots of Mothers of the Bride/Groom for their children’s big day! Lisa shows me her bestseller for this occasion, The Limoncello. Every hat is still then custom fitted, tweaked, feathers added or anything needed to make it match your ensemble.

LVH-9 LVH-10 LVH-11

When Lisa first meets a client to create an entirely bespoke piece, she says the first thing she must do is sit and get to know them, and in her showroom that is with a glass of Champagne daaaarling.

LVH-12 LVH-30 LVH-33

Since you must wear the hat and not the other way around, you need an expert to design one that fits your personality, your colouring, your eyes, the shape of your face and body. Lisa will then play with fabrics, layers, height, jewels to design something that is entirely yours. Now as she mentioned jewels, I saw these little pretties in the corner of my eye.  The design for these is still top secret but lets just say, I cannot wait to see her Autumn collection. The jewels have been created for her by London designer BIJOUX BEC and they are deliciously sparkly!

LVH-17 LVH-18 LVH-19

Along with your hat, hatinatorm or fascinator, Lisa creates a beautiful buttonhole to compliment your outfit that can then be worn time and time again.

So even though Lisa is based in Bishops Cleeve, beautifully situated for our Cheltenham Racecourse, her clients travel from all over the world for their LVH head wear. Celebs spotted in LVH originals are Carol Vorderman, Jackie Llewelyn Bowen, Dr Dawn Harper, Pixie McKenna, Miss Cheltenham and many of The Cotswolds socialites. Lisa’s work has also been featured in Vogue, Tatler, and Bride Magazine.

LVH-2 LVH-14 LVH-15

You can also find her creations stocked at the ultra glamorous store Beatrice Von Tresckow who has a branch in stylish Montpellier.

She also regularly works with worldwide designer and fashion guru Caroline Charles.

LVH-27 LVH-28

Can you see? This lady is really going places. And I can’t wait to see where. You can feel the passion emanate from Lisa and she is such a bubbly and sweet person, you can only wish the best for her and hope that she never stops reaching for the stars, and looking flipping good at the same time! With Hattie of course.

LVH-44

Now stay tuned on the blog as Lisa and I have a project in the pipework and we will be featuring her hand stitched veil designs! You will NOT want to miss that!!

Oobaloos Wedding Photography Featured In The English Wedding Blog

Now you may remember I wrote a blog a few months back called

‘Your photographer is for life, not just your wedding’

featuring Lucinda, Alex and little Flo.

I have recorded the milestones for this lovely little family for a while now, and I think it is safe to say that the feeling is mutual for wanting to continue this for many years to come. When I wrote that blog I was very excited to be shooting their upcoming wedding at Ellenborough Park, Cheltenham.  Did we think that one of the biggest blogs in the country would pick it for publication? Nope! Well….here it is! In awe again of all the work that went on behind the scenes of this wedding to make it Picture Perfect.

Read the feature here on The English Wedding Blog!

Special mention has to go to my lovely friend Amy Hickey who really does make every bride look and feel like a princess in their bridal make up. Teamed with Cat at Yoshi Hair, they made the bridal preparation experience complete….along with some prosecco!!

Oobaloos Wedding Photography’s Engagement Shoots

BeckyMart09 BeckyMart14 a1 a3

I have said this before and I will say it again. I have shot many weddings where we have previously had an engagement shoot and I LOVE it!! I really feel like I know my couples better and when I arrive on their wedding day it really feels like I am joining friends.

Pre-wedding or ‘engagement’ photo shoots are a session that you book with your photographer a couple of months before the wedding. Many of my couples book a shoot with me to get comfortable in front of the camera, and they will often use their images to add an extra personal touch to their wedding.

Booking in a pre-wedding photo shoot will give you an opportunity to get to know me, how I work, and get a feel for what to expect on your wedding day. You’ll gain an understanding of how I will work with you on your wedding day to get the best images. If you book a pre-wedding shoot, on the wedding day I can guarantee you’ll feel completely at ease, which will reflect in your photos.

You will likely see your photographer more than anyone else on your wedding day … including your fiancé! This is a perfect ice breaker to transform your photographer from a ‘stranger’ taking your photos to a ‘friend’ taking your photos.

Not everyone is super confident in front of a camera. My experience in wedding photography will be able to put you at ease so that you are comfortable being your self. You’ll be able to appreciate your beauty, grace and unique personality so that you identify exactly the person you want to show off on your wedding day.

The engagement shoot is the perfect dummy run and also helps you determine how you want to pose, look and act on the big day.

Use the images from your pre-wedding shoot to tell your photographer which photos you like and why, so that they can focus on those types of images on your wedding day. This will help ensure you get the photos you were expecting on the day.

Oobaloos Wedding Photography in Cheltenham Meets Make Up Artist, Amy Hickey.

This week I met up with the delightful, bubbly and ever so talented Amy Hickey. I met Amy through a mutual friend last year and we got on like a house on fire and have since then worked on both excited styled shoots and weddings together. I absolutely adore working with her, and I know that our brides have enjoyed our duo and easy banter!

Here she is actually modelling for me at the styled shoot i was asked to do at Sudeley Castle last year. Make Up by herself of course. We were let down at the very last minute by our model and I am still so grateful for Amy stepping in! Doesn’t she look divine? You can see a lot of those images from these shoot right here…  /http://www.sudeleycastle.co.uk/weddings/

We are so lucky that Amy has shared her TOP TIPS for YOU!

Go Pro! Hiring a make up artist on the day can take the weight off your mind and really help you relax the morning of your wedding. Bridal make up is different and more specialised.  You need to take into account that not only do you want it to last the whole day, through your vows, photographs and dancing around the dance floor, your make up has to survive many emotions including a few happy tears, warm flushes along with the many kisses on your perfectly blushed cheeks.
Richards-163
Whether you have your make up done professionally or are doing it yourself, trial the make up. When having a trial or practising make sure you wear white or the colour of your dress as it can make a big difference to the colours and tones of your make up. If you’re having a make up artist they will book you in for trial first, if you go alone its best you test out new make up and make sure it is suitable for your skin and lasts.
Find some pictures of make up you like or would like to try at your trial. Make sure you take into account that if you have the skin colour and tone of Nicole Kidman then the make up of Beyonce may not translate onto you. Also don’t let a make up artist hijack your look, personally I think a bride should still look and feel like themselves but just an enhanced more perfect self.
Richards-59 Richards-28 Richards-23
Emphasise your eyes, brighten them by using a brightening eye base. You may have lack of sleep running up to the day but nobody needs to know. I suggest By Terry’s hylaluronic base, this magic product can be applied on the lid and under the eye to help conceal along with plump any fine lines.  Another must have product is Bobbi Browns colour corrector.
Professionally shaped brows give immediate lift to the face.  Eyebrows that are enhanced open up the eye area, gives more definition and makes your eyes look brighter. If you haven’t had your eyebrows shaped before, you need to test drive this first. Some people react with a flush of redness whereas others can be red for a few days.
Use individual lashes; these are far more natural than strip lashes. You can get the semi permanent ones from a salon a few days before or get your makeup artist to apply the temporary 24  hours ones along with the makeup on the day. Or if you prefer to go natural, eyelash curlers are a fantastic way to make your eyes look bigger and lashes longer .
Mascara, it’s my number 1 asked question, “what’s your favourite mascara?” Answer? It depends on the lashes and the look you want to achieve. With bridal make up I suggest waterproof. Most waterproofs seem to me thicker and heavier so I like to use a mascara that will enhance yet separate the lashes making them look more fluffy than clumpy. I finish by putting a coat of waterproof clear mascara over the top. Try bare minerals locked and coated £12.
BOOTH COLOUR-26
No need to cake the the make up, its a myth you need to wear a lot more. A more matte look on the T zone is more beneficial and using a base that hasn’t got flash back will help your make up looking flawless and less reflective. This can be achieved by using a finishing powder.
Lips, don’t be frightened to go for something a little more colourful as your lips may need a bit more depth when wearing a long white dress. Pale lips can sometimes get lost in the look.
Plenty of time is needed. Leave at least 45 minutes for you to complete your make up. I would say an hour so you can completely relax and if you need to correct anywhere you will have time to do so.
Smile, be happy and enjoy the day!
BOOTH COLOUR-35
Bridal make up is my favourite make up, it’s not just about the make up, it’s the journey that takes you to the day that I love! Getting to know the bride from the first Initial contact to the first make up  right up until the day.
The wedding day, a day that changes their lives and makes memories forever! The bride looking in the mirror, smiling and saying she’s never felt so beautiful and happy touches me every time! I’m not just a make up artist on the day, I try and be Mary Poppins, taking a bag of goodies, like rescue remedy, ladies necessities, tissues etc etc along with a big smile! A morning of fun, laughter and emotions is what makes it so special and unique. It makes me hungry to keep doing my job to my best ability and making sure that all the bridal party is happy and ready for a party and celebration to remember.
Richards-25BOOTH COLOUR-40
I love SK:N clinic’s range of products. Brides can book in for free advice at Cheltenham clinic on Montpellier Walk.  I always offer skin advice a my bridal trials. I don’t recommend a particular brand as I believe all skin types and people require different products! I’ve worked along side and trained in over 60 brands, I can always offer knowledge on more than one brand and price range to suit clients needs!
Thank you so much for these awesome tips Amy! I am a big make up lover myself and I can’t wait to pop on in and see you at your part time base at SK:N CLINIC.
Always a pleasure.
Amy and myself are working together on a BIG project at the end of March, so be sure to check back!!

I hope you have enjoyed this  instalment in ‘My OobaFave Wedding Suppliers’. Don’t forget to pop over the Amy Hickey’s WEBSITE and have a nosy there too!

Oobaloos Wedding Photography meets OMmaZing Chocolates

ommazing-1

On a bright but icy cold morning, I drove out in the gorgeous Cotswold countryside to meet with Daniella Warner of OMmaZing Chocolates.  I met Daniella last year at a networking event and had a taste of her marvellous delights!! I am not even a chocolate eater but a well made truffle or artisan dark chocolate will still make me melt!

So as Daniella made me a hot mug of coffee and gently pushed over some dark chocolate truffles. Of course I mumbled the obligatory “oh I shouldn’t, I’m on a diet” then popped one straight in my mouth.

Heaven!! Lightly dusted coating with a melt in the mouth middle…..I popped in another one.  As I did this, Daniella mentioned ‘healthy eating’. What’s that? I’ve just shoved 3 truffles in my mouth!

‘Raw Energy Balls’ she said!! Daniella comes from a Holistic and Therapeutic background, hence the ‘OM’ in OMmaZing Chocolates, and has designed  raw organic energy balls, which taste good and deliver powerful benefits for health and wellness. They are organic, dairy free, sugar free, vegetarian & vegan and each one will deliver a powerful nutritional punch…ideal for a quick healthy treat. Ideal for diabetics too! Raw chocolate bars with a choice of mixed dried fruit, nuts and seeds, such as pistachios, hazelnuts, brazil nuts, walnuts, almonds, cranberries, cherries, apricots and spices.  This is what is offered in this range:

Raw Walnut & Cashew Energy Balls
Raw Cacao Ginger Energy Balls
Raw Coconut & Hot Spicy Energy Balls
Raw Chocolate Brownie Balls
Raw Marzipan balls covered in raw chocolate or dark chocolate.

Interesting to know! Delicious? You bet they are!!

ommazing-5

Daniella is currently getting her game head on for Valentines day and is looking forward to a flurry of orders after a nice break from Christmas! Look at these heart shaped, pure dark chocolates! Packaged in black and gold box with a green raffia bow this is the ultimate decadence in Artisan Chocolate gifts for a loved one!

ommazing-2 ommazing-7 ommazing-10 ommazing-12

OMmaZing Chocolates new venture for this year is going to be Wedding Favours!! ChocoPops that can be initialled, wrapped in cellophane and tied in a ribbon with the colour of your choice to match your theme. At £1.50 per ChocoPop, this is a steal!!

Daniella is a trained Artisan Chocolatier. If you are interested in meeting with her to discuss your wedding or gift needs, be prepared for a lovely cuppa and chat and a tasting where she will discuss with you exactly how to design a bespoke chocolate favour JUST FOR YOU!!

ommazing-8 ommazing-9

I asked Daniella how she got into this delicious business……she went along on a course to support a friend! I just love how these things happen. When you fall into things like this I firmly believe in fate. The feedback she got from friends and family was that these should be made available to the public.

Her biggest supporter is her husband…although she says that’s only if he can stop eating them long enough! His favourite is her signature Salted Caramel Cup!! Her other biggest business supporter has been Sali Green who is well known in Cheltenham for her sunny and helpful nature. She runs the Promotional directory, Iwork4u Glos. Where you will also find myself!!

ommazing-11

So brides? What are you waiting for? Get super dooper brownie (or truffle) points with your guests for being bang on style with OMmaZing Chocolates. Daniella has a passion for excellence and lovingly creates exquisite handmade chocolates, made to order, exclusively for you.

I hope you have enjoyed this first instalment in ‘My OobaFave Wedding Suppliers’. Next week I will introduce you to Charlotte Elizabeth Bespoke Floristry for this years top tips for blooms in season and colours to rock 2016.
